Biomorphosis is the genetic ascension perk in Stellaris, and with the BioGenesis DLC it starts a situation in three stages, where you pick Purity, Cloning or Mutation each time and finish with one genetic tradition tree and the option of a new government.
To get it going, you will need two other Ascension Perks and a free tradition slot first. Build a Genomic Research Facility in the same month you take the perk, because the situation will not move at all until one is running, and have Gene Tailoring researched before progress reaches 333, where Stage II begins.
For most empires, the best path is Purity in Stage I, Mutation in Stage II and Purity again in Stage III, ending in the Purity tree. Pop-growth, wide and Clone Vat empires will do better with Purity, Cloning and Cloning into the Cloning tree, conquest empires with many planets and species with Mutation, Cloning and Mutation into the Mutation tree, and Hive Minds with Mutation, Cloning and Cloning. Wilderness and Evolutionary Predators are locked to one approach by their origins, and so is Clone Army once its event chain ends in Clone Potential.
This guide is written for Stellaris 4.5.3 ‘Cygnus’ on PC, the patch from 4 November 2026, and assumes you own BioGenesis. Most numbers in it were taken from the game files of 4.5.3 and from Paradox’s patch notes. Patch 4.5 made the situation about half as long, and many older guides will show you numbers that no longer apply.

How to start Biomorphosis
Biomorphosis is one of the ascension paths, the big transformations of which every empire can only take one (our ascension perks guide compares it with the other paths). Older guides call the same perk Engineered Evolution.
Before you can pick it, your empire will have to meet these requirements:
- You own BioGenesis. Without it, the perk only gives you the old Genetics tradition tree and the Biomorphosis agenda, with no situation and no Purity, Cloning or Mutation (our DLC tier list covers what else the expansion adds).
- Your main species is organic. Hive Minds can take Biomorphosis, but Machine Intelligences, cyborg empires and robotic species cannot.
- Your empire does not use the Natural Design civic (Innate Design for Hive Minds) or the Augmentation Bazaars civic, is not a Chosen or Entropy Drinkers empire, and did not start with the Teachers of the Shroud, Cybernetic Creed, Synthetic Fertility or Endbringers origin.
- You are not on another ascension path, such as The Flesh is Weak, Synthetic Evolution or Mind over Matter.
- You have already picked two other Ascension Perks, which makes Biomorphosis your third perk at the earliest.
- You still have an empty tradition tree slot, out of 7 at most.
- Right after the perk, you build a Genomic Research Facility. Wilderness empires cannot build one and do not need it.
- You research Gene Tailoring before the situation reaches 333 progress.
You can only build the Genomic Research Facility once you own the perk. It costs 800 Minerals and 8 Energy upkeep, takes 600 days to build and is limited to one per planet. Since progress is multiplied by zero until one is running, the first 20 months of Biomorphosis are going to be spent waiting for it, so have the Minerals ready when you click the perk. Its 200 Medical Worker jobs will turn into Genomic Researchers, while a Hive Mind’s Facility has 200 Spawning Drone jobs that turn into Genomic Drones.
You do not need Gene Tailoring for the perk itself, only to get through Stage II. When Stage II starts, you will receive a third of its research progress if you do not have it yet, but the situation will stay frozen until the tech is done. Personally, I would research it well before. Gene Tailoring is a tier 3 Society tech that needs Genome Mapping, and owning the perk makes it far more likely to show up among your options. The Biomorphosis council agenda that comes with the perk also gives 25% research progress toward the first genetic tech you are missing, starting with Genome Mapping and Gene Tailoring.
The Clone Army origin is the only exception to the two-perk rule. It can take Biomorphosis as its very first Ascension Perk once the origin’s event chain has ended in Clone Fertility or Clone Potential, although it still needs the free tradition slot.
How long Biomorphosis takes
Like every situation in Stellaris, Biomorphosis is a progress bar in your Situation Log that fills up month by month. It needs 1,000 progress at a base speed of +5 a month, with Stage II starting at 333 and Stage III at 667. Genomic Researchers will only add a small bonus to that speed.
From the month you take the perk, you should count on roughly 16 to 18 years. The first 20 months go into building the Facility, and the rest is about 15 to 16 years of progress, depending on how many Genomic Researchers you have. If you see 1,800 progress or +15 a month in older guides, those values are outdated.
| Setup | Progress a month | Stage II | Stage III | Done |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Facility, 200 researchers (also hives) | 5.125 | 65 | 131 | 18.0 years |
| 1 Facility + medical building, 400 researchers | 5.25 | 64 | 128 | 17.6 years |
| 2 Facilities + medical buildings, 800 researchers | 5.50 | 61 | 122 | 16.8 years |
| 3 Facilities + medical buildings, 1,200 researchers | 5.75 | 58 | 116 | 16.2 years |
| Wilderness (no Facility, no researchers) | 5.00 | 67 | 134 | 16.7 years |
A second Facility, or a Medical Center on the Facility planet (which doubles its Genomic Researchers), will only save you a few months over the whole run. The random events of the situation matter more, since some of them have an option that adds 50 progress at once, such as “Stamp out these dissidents!”, “Unusual mutations can boost our research.” or, for Hive Minds, “Cull the weak to strengthen the whole.”, and each of those will save you about 10 months. Check what else the option does, and if you can live with it, take it.
Two options do the opposite. “Superior individuals for a superior world.” gives you +20% Leader Lifespan and -15% Leader Upkeep for five years, but also slows the situation by 10% for that time, and “This requires a full investigation!” halves its speed for 12 months. Each of them is going to cost you about six months. Additionally, the situation is paused while a stage choice or one of its events is still open, so answer them as soon as they pop up.
Biomorphosis also has a running cost. As long as it makes progress, your Society research speed will be 10% lower and your Biology research speed 5% lower, and that lasts for about 15 to 16 years after your first Facility starts running. If you badly need a certain Society tech, it is probably better to research it before you take the perk.
Stage choices
At the start of every stage, an event will ask you to choose Purity, Cloning or Mutation. The first one pops up a day after you take the perk, and unless your origin locks you to one approach, you can switch to a different one in every stage.
Every pick gives you a bonus at once, mostly on planets with a Genomic Research Facility, and it decides which flexible tradition fills that stage’s slot in your final genetic tree. A flexible tradition is a tradition whose effect depends on a choice you made during the game, which is why a Purity tree can very well contain a Cloning or Mutation tradition. Those traditions will only start working once you adopt them in the tree after the situation has ended.
| Stage | Purity | Cloning | Mutation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stage I | Heightened Attributes: up to +30% Job Efficiency per planet | Genomic Growth: +1 Monthly Organic Pop Growth per Facility | Environmental Integration: 175% habitability ceiling |
| Stage II | Optimized Neurology: Leader Starting Traits +1 | Biochemical Composure: Backup Clones for leaders | Somatic Subversiveness: Effective Leader Skill Level +1 |
| Stage III | Imperfection Remediation: Empire Size from Pops -10% | Artificial Population: Governing Ethics Attraction +50% | Nucleotide Isolation: Bioadaptability and Leviathan traits |
Stage I
Stage I matters most, because it decides your economy bonus. Purity’s Heightened Attributes will give organic pops +5% Job Efficiency per Medical Building tier and another +15% on a planet with a Genomic Research Facility, which adds up to +30% on a planet with Cyto-Revitalization Centers and a Facility. Hive Minds cannot build medical buildings and get just the +15%.
Cloning’s Genomic Growth cuts Pop Upkeep and Pop Amenities Usage by 10% and adds +1 Monthly Organic Pop Growth on every Facility planet. For most empires, it is the weakest of the three.
Mutation’s Environmental Integration replaces your founder species’ habitability trait with Mutagenic Habitability, which starts at 50% on every planet class and adapts to the planet its pops live on. Every 10% of habitability above 100% will then give +2.5% Job Efficiency and -2.5% Pop Housing Usage and Pop Amenities Usage. Species you gain later won’t get the trait by themselves, only through the Mutation tree’s Divergence Directive agenda.
There are three different habitability caps, which explains the mix of numbers you will see. A Mutation Authority alone lets your organic species go up to 125%. Environmental Integration raises the cap for Mutagenic Habitability species to 175%, and under a Mutation Authority it becomes Empowered Environmental Integration with a 250% cap. Until 4.5.3, the authority’s tooltip wrongly showed 175%, and some older guides still give that number for the authority.
Purity is the strongest default, since most regular empires build medical buildings anyway. Mutation makes more sense for Hive Minds and for conquest empires that end up on every kind of planet.
Stage II
Stage II decides your leader tradition. Purity’s Optimized Neurology gives new leaders an extra starting trait, lets them start 25% younger and lowers the maximum number of negative traits by one. Cloning’s Biochemical Composure gives all eligible leaders a Backup Clone, a trait that lets them avoid death. With a Cloning Authority it turns into Regenerative Cloning, where every leader starts with a Backup Clone and that clone also adds +2 Effective Leader Skill Level.
Mutation’s Somatic Subversiveness gives all leaders +1 Effective Leader Skill Level, +10% Leader Experience Gain and +10% Leader Lifespan. It is the safe pick, because it works for every leader without conditions. Biochemical Composure is stronger if you plan to finish in the Cloning tree, because the Cloning Authority you can take at the end will upgrade it.
Stage III
Purity’s Imperfection Remediation gives -10% Empire Size from Pops across the whole empire, faster subspecies integration and faster purging, and it allows the purge policy option and species rights. Xenophile empires will get a version of it without purging. Cloning’s Artificial Population gives +50% Governing Ethics Attraction, -10 crime per 100 Genomic Researchers and -10% Empire Size from Pops for Vat-Grown species. Mutation’s Nucleotide Isolation lets you add Bioadaptability, Social Pheromones, Limited Regeneration and Leviathan traits through Species Modification.
For most empires, the empire-wide -10% from Imperfection Remediation is the strongest of these smaller picks. Beware that a Purity or Cloning pick in Stage III will take away the option to harvest DNA after some leviathan kills. If leviathan traits matter to you, take Mutation here instead. Our leviathan traits guide explains which guardian gives what.
Picking the same approach again
The pick bonuses depend on how many times you have chosen an approach, whatever the stage, and the second bonus comes in addition to the first:
- Purity gives +10% Pop Growth Speed on Facility planets with the first pick and -1 Leader Maximum Negative Traits for the whole empire with the second.
- Cloning gives +1 Monthly Organic Pop Growth with the first pick and +500 Amenities with the second, both on Facility planets.
- Mutation gives +10% Habitability with the first pick and +100 auto-modded pops a month with the second, again on Facility planets.
A third pick of the same approach adds no new bonus. You will get 50% research progress toward that approach’s tech (Gene Seed Purification, Gene Banks or Targeted Gene Expressions) instead, or Unity worth 24 months of income, at least 350, if you already have the tech or cannot research it. That is why none of the default paths below picks the same approach three times, unless an origin forces it.
Best path for your empire
Which path is best depends mostly on how your empire grows and which government you want at the end. Here are the default picks for 4.5.3, with the tree and government each of them leads to.
| Empire | Stages I > II > III | Tree | Government |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most regular empires, tall or default | Purity > Mutation > Purity | Purity | Eugenic Hierarchy or Organic Syndicate |
| Pop-growth, wide or Clone Vat empire | Purity > Cloning > Cloning | Cloning | Cordant Multiplicity or Replicating Regency |
| Many planets, many species, low-micro conquest | Mutation > Cloning > Mutation | Mutation | Mutation version of your authority |
| Hive Mind | Mutation > Cloning > Cloning | Cloning (Vat-Grown hives) or Mutation (hive-world hives) | Replicating Horde or Adaptive Dominion |
| Origin locks: Clone Army, Wilderness, Evolutionary Predators | Cloning only / Purity only / Mutation only | Cloning / Purity / Mutation | Cloning / no advanced authority / own Mutation authorities |
Most regular empires
Purity, Mutation, Purity into the Purity tree is the path I would pick for most regular empires, tall or not. It combines the Job Efficiency of Heightened Attributes, +1 skill for every leader and an empire-wide -10% Empire Size from Pops, and the two Purity picks add pop growth and fewer negative leader traits. The Purity tree then gives you the most gene-modding points, which will feed your Purity authority. Eugenic Hierarchy (Oligarchic) and Organic Syndicate (Corporate) are the best fits.
Pop-growth empires
If your empire grows through Clone Vats and pop assembly, or you play wide and simply want as many pops as possible, go Purity, Cloning, Cloning into the Cloning tree. The two Cloning picks add pop growth and +500 Amenities on each Facility planet, and once you take a Cloning Authority, Stage II turns into Regenerative Cloning. The tree itself makes Clone Vats stronger, allows more of them and makes the Vat-Grown trait free. Any Cloning authority works, and Cordant Multiplicity (Democratic) or Replicating Regency (Oligarchic) are good choices.
Conquest empires
Empires with many planets and many species, especially conquerors who do not want to terraform every world or gene-edit every species they take over, should go Mutation, Cloning, Mutation into the Mutation tree. Under a Mutation Authority, Stage I becomes Empowered Environmental Integration, and all your organic species will gain Adapted Habitability. Biochemical Composure gives your leaders Backup Clones, and Nucleotide Isolation keeps the leviathan DNA option open. Take the Mutation version of your authority, which will be Biodiverse Liberty, Catalytic Command, Genomic Expansionist, Hybrid Mandate or Organ Usury.
Hive Minds
For Hive Minds, Mutation, Cloning, Cloning is probably the best path, since hives only get the Facility part of Heightened Attributes. Finish in the Cloning tree with Replicating Horde if your hive grows through Vat-Grown assembly, which also turns Stage II into Regenerative Cloning with +2 Effective Councilor Skill. If you turn your planets into hive worlds instead, finish in the Mutation tree with Adaptive Dominion. This row is a little bit less clear-cut than the others.
Locked origins
Clone Army with Clone Potential will have to pick Cloning in every stage, Wilderness can only pick Purity, and Evolutionary Predators can only pick Mutation. You will find their details in the origins section below.
Your genetic tradition tree
When the situation reaches 1,000, you choose one genetic tree from the approaches you picked at least once. It doesn’t have to be the approach you picked most often, and a Purity, Cloning, Cloning run can still end in the Purity tree. The tree arrives with its adoption already done, and you can only ever have one genetic tree per empire.
Bear in mind that you will only get the tree if a tradition slot is still free at that very moment. With all 7 tree slots filled when Biomorphosis ends, the choice gives you nothing, and that tree can never be adopted later on. The perk already needs an empty slot when you take it, but it is easy to fill that slot with another tree during the 16 to 18 years the situation runs. Make sure to keep one slot empty until it is over.
Each genetic tree has an adoption bonus, two fixed traditions, the three flexible traditions you chose during the situation and a finisher. The adoption and the finisher are free, while the five traditions in between will cost Unity as usual.
- The Purity tree gives +20% Leader Lifespan on adoption, and its fixed traditions are Genotype Regeneration and Exemplary Genetics.
- The Cloning tree gives every Clone Vats +1.5 Monthly Organic Pop Growth at a higher upkeep, plus Evolutionary Extrapolation (+15% Biology research) and Somatic Synthesization.
- The Mutation tree gives your founder species Adaptive Mutations, plus Planned Polymorphism (Adaptive trait effects doubled to +10%) and Unnatural Selection.
Every finisher gives you an extra Ascension Perk slot, and outside Wilderness it also allows that approach’s authorities. The Purity and Mutation finishers also turn every Medical Worker in your empire into a Genomic Researcher, which Cloning gets from Evolutionary Extrapolation, and once the situation is over, those jobs will produce twice the Society research they did during it. The Cloning finisher allows one more Clone Vats per capital building tier. Our tradition tier list shows where the genetic trees stand next to the regular ones.
Advanced authorities
Your authority is the form of government of your empire, such as Democratic, Oligarchic or Hive Mind. Once you finish the genetic tree, an event will let you swap your current authority for its genetic version, or keep the old one. There are 18 genetic authorities, six for each approach, and Evolutionary Predators have their own Mutation set.
Purity authorities scale with Species Genetic Perfection, which counts the trait points spent on positive traits minus the points gained from negative ones. For every point, Eugenic Hierarchy (Oligarchic) gives organic pops +1.25% Job Efficiency, Phenotypical Autonomy (Democratic) +2.5% happiness, and Nucleic Judiciary (Dictatorial), Organic Syndicate (Corporate) and Purity Paradigm (Hive Mind) +0.25 Society Research, Trade or Unity per 100 pops. Nucleic Judiciary’s Genetic Purist governors also add +3 stability to their planet and +1 to their sector per point, although the tooltip says 5 and 2.5.
The Cloning authorities give flat bonuses instead. Cordant Multiplicity (Democratic) gives -10% Empire Size from Pops and +25% faction output, Replicating Regency (Oligarchic) +2 councilor skill, Hereditary Continuity (Imperial) +5 ruler skill, and Replicating Horde (Hive Mind) +15% Monthly Organic Pop Growth Multiplier and -33% Empire Size Effect.
Every Mutation authority will give your organic species Adapted Habitability, up to 125% without Environmental Integration, in addition to its own bonuses. Biodiverse Liberty (Democratic) gives +5% Job Efficiency for all pops, Catalytic Command (Oligarchic) +10% for specialists, Genomic Expansionist (Imperial) +15% for workers and Adaptive Dominion (Hive Mind) +15% Habitability.
Gene modding
Each tree also changes what you can do with Species Modification. Purity gives the most points (+6 Organic Species Modification Points and +2 Trait Picks), is the only tree whose traditions let you remove positive traits, and is the only one that makes advanced traits cheaper, a discount that works as intended since 4.5.3. Cloning gives +4 points and +2 picks, can remove Pop Growth traits and adds Vat-Grown for free. Mutation gives +4 points and +4 picks, can add negative traits and ignores phenotype restrictions.
All three trees can add or remove advanced organic traits, halve the cost of modification and change the appearance of your pops. Our trait tier list covers which traits are worth the points.
A Vat-Grown species is infertile and gains new pops only through assembly, such as Clone Vats and Genomic Research Facilities. In return, it gets +25% Monthly Organic Pop Growth Multiplier, -5% Pop Housing Usage and -10% Pop Amenities Usage. It is best kept for species that already grow mostly through assembly.
Origins with their own rules
Clone Army
The event chain of the Clone Army origin ends in one of two outcomes. Clone Fertility leaves all three approaches open, while Clone Potential locks every stage to Cloning and the end to the Cloning tree, which then gets Clone Army versions of several traditions.
Before ascension, your clones are limited by the Ancient Clone Vats, each of which sustains 2,500 Clone Soldiers, with five vats at most. With Clone Potential and the Cloning tree, more buildings will sustain clones: 1,000 per Genomic Research Facility, 1,000 per Clone Vats building once you have both the Cloning adoption and the finisher, and 500 per Medical Building tier with Artificial Population. These extra caps arrive with the traditions you adopt after the situation. Our best origins guide goes through the rest of the origin.
Wilderness
Wilderness empires only get the Purity approach and end in their own version of the Purity tree. They cannot build a Genomic Research Facility and do not need one, which leaves the situation at a flat +5 a month, or about 17 years in total. Stage II will still wait for Gene Tailoring, though.
Their Purity tree has its own Stage III tradition with +5 Maximum Planet Size and a finisher that makes all districts uncapped, and it gives the extra Ascension Perk but no advanced authority. One of our best builds is a Wilderness empire that takes exactly this route.
Evolutionary Predators
Evolutionary Predators can only pick Mutation and get their own Mutation authorities: Genetic Electorate, Bio-Magnates, Apex Principate, Deathless Dynasty and Chimeral Consciousness. Purging and keeping livestock pops feed their separate Adaptive Evolution situation and do nothing for Biomorphosis.
Overtuned
Overtuned has had no shortcut since 4.3. It needs two earlier Ascension Perks like every origin except Clone Army, and the Overtuned rush guides from 2025 are out of date.
Hive Mind empires
Hive Minds are not an origin, but they run their own version of the situation with all three approaches. Since they cannot build medical buildings, the Facility is their only source of Genomic Drones.
Why Biomorphosis is not progressing
If the situation seems stuck, hover over its monthly progress in the Situation Log. A line at zero will tell you the reason, and it will be one of these:
- “No enabled Genomic Research Facility” means your Facility is still being built, has been disabled or you have lost it. This rule covers all three stages, and losing your only Facility will freeze the situation again.
- “Does NOT have Gene Tailoring Technology” means you are in Stage II without Gene Tailoring. The start of Stage II already gave you a third of it, and you simply have to research the rest.
- “Situation Paused” means a stage choice or one of the situation’s events is still waiting for your answer.
If the progress is only slow, look for the half speed from “This requires a full investigation!” or the 10% slowdown from the Superior Individuals modifier, both mentioned above.
Changes for returning players
Biomorphosis arrived with BioGenesis and the free 4.0 update in May 2025. If you remember an older version, these changes matter most:
- 4.0.22 lowered the Mutagenic Habitability cap from 200% to 175% and halved the per-point values of the Purity authorities.
- 4.3 (March 2026) swapped the Stage I and II traditions of Purity and the Stage II and III traditions of Cloning, moved the -10% Empire Size from Pops to Imperfection Remediation and ended the early access of the Overtuned origin.
- 4.5 (September 2026) made Biomorphosis about half as long.
- 4.5.3 (November 2026) fixed the Mutation Authority tooltip that showed a 175% habitability cap instead of 125%, made Exemplary Genetics reduce the cost of advanced traits as intended, and stopped Mutagenic Habitability species from taking Hydrocentric without an Aquatic trait.
Stellaris 4.6 and the Willpower DLC are due on 23 November 2026. Their dev diaries show no changes to genetic ascension so far, and this guide will get an update if the launch changes anything.
Biomorphosis questions
Is Biomorphosis worth it?
For a biological empire, I would say yes, and since 4.5 it is the easiest ascension path to recommend for one. It costs you an Ascension Perk, a tradition slot and about 15 to 16 years of slower Society research. In return, you will get a strong economy bonus, a genetic tree with an extra Ascension Perk slot at the end and the option of an advanced authority. The earlier you take it, the more of the game you will play with the finished tree.
How many Genomic Research Facilities should you build?
One is enough to run the situation, and extra ones barely speed it up. They are still useful, because most pick bonuses, the +15% from Heightened Attributes and the +1 pop growth from Genomic Growth only work on planets with a Facility. Each of them costs 800 Minerals to build and 8 Energy a month, and I would add them on your biggest planets once your economy can carry them.
Does Biomorphosis affect bioships?
Biomorphosis has nothing to do with bioships and will work the same whether your fleet is biological or mechanical. The only indirect link is the Shared Genetics hive civic, whose ship bonuses count your main species’ positive and negative traits. Gene modding from a genetic tree will change those bonuses as well.
Conclusion
Biomorphosis takes a long time even after 4.5, and most of the mistakes happen at the very start or at the very end: a Facility that was not queued, Gene Tailoring that is missing when Stage II begins, or all 7 tradition slots filled when the situation finishes. Avoid those three and the rest is fairly forgiving, since most empires can change their approach in every stage. If you are unsure, Purity, Mutation, Purity into the Purity tree is probably the way to go.
