Lorroakan is the wizard of Ramazith’s Tower in Baldur’s Gate 3 who wants you to bring him Dame Aylin, the Nightsong, and siding with him or with her is one of the bigger decisions of Act 3. Aylin also has a habit of dropping in that fight and staying on the floor, which looks fairly alarming for someone who is supposed to be immortal.
Siding with Aylin is the better pick. On her side, going down against Lorroakan will not cost you her, because the game fully restores her once he is dead and the fight is over, even though her revive is switched off while it lasts. She can only die for good through one story choice, back in the Shadowfell in Act 2.
How Aylin’s revive and the quest outcomes work here is taken from the current Patch 8 game files, and Larian’s patch notes are quoted wherever something changed since launch. Beware that it spoils Aylin’s story in Act 2 and Act 3.
Should you kill Lorroakan?
Lorroakan will ask you to find Aylin and hand her over. You can tell her about him and fight him together in his tower, kill him without her, lie to him that she is dead, or give her to him. There is no outcome where you keep both of them as allies, so one side is going to lose out.
The table shows what each route means for Aylin, Isobel and Rolan.
| Choice | What happens to Aylin | Isobel | Rolan | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Side with Aylin and fight Lorroakan together | Fights at your side and loses Child of the Moonmaiden when the fight starts. If she drops, the game restores her after the fight, and if Lorroakan’s body is still on the top floor, she finishes him. | Stays with Aylin. After your next long rest Aylin is back in camp, and once the two have said goodbye, both leave and come back for the final battle. | According to the wiki, he turns on Lorroakan if you saved Cal and Lia in Act 2, otherwise he may fight for Lorroakan. Takes over the tower if he survives. | Aylin and Isobel in the final battle, plus Rolan if he survives the fight and takes over the tower. |
| Kill Lorroakan without her, before you tell her | Counts as siding with her. She is never in the fight, so as far as the quest files show, she keeps Child of the Moonmaiden. | Same as above. Both help in the final battle. | Shows up at the tower afterwards and can take it over if he is alive. | The same allies as siding with her. |
| Lie to Lorroakan that she is dead | Safe for now. No fight, no capture, and Lorroakan stops looking for her. | As far as the quest scripts show, lying alone does not make her or Aylin final-battle allies. | Can take over the tower if you kill Lorroakan later. | Nothing yet. If you kill Lorroakan later, it counts as siding with Aylin. |
| Side with Lorroakan | You fight her while she has Moonmother’s Embrace and three Moonlight Slivers. She ends up defeated, and after your next long rest Lorroakan locks her in his soul cage. | Leaves your camp if you do not talk to her within about two long rests, and a threat note takes her place. | Goes back to running Sorcerous Sundries if he is alive. | 5,000 gold and Lorroakan’s Firestorm in the final battle. |
| Side with Lorroakan, and Lorroakan dies in that fight too | Disappears after your next long rest and leaves a threat note. | Leaves your camp for good. | If he was alive, he and his siblings Cal and Lia are found dead. | The gold, if you collect it from Rolan before your next long rest, but none of the four as allies. |
| Side with Lorroakan and tell Isobel | Stays caged and swears revenge on your descendants. | Goes to Ramazith’s Tower and is killed there. | Goes back to running Sorcerous Sundries if he is alive. | 5,000 gold and Lorroakan’s Firestorm, without Isobel. |

I would say siding with Aylin is the right call for most parties. You will keep Aylin and Isobel for the final battle, Rolan takes over the tower and helps as well as long as he survives (he is more likely to fight on your side if you saved Cal and Lia in Act 2), and all you give up is Lorroakan’s gold and his Firestorm. By Act 3, 5,000 gold will not buy you all that much.
Telling her first has one clear cost, and that is her passive. If you tell her, she will come along to the tower and lose Child of the Moonmaiden in the fight. If you kill Lorroakan before telling her, the game still counts it as siding with her, you will get the same allies, and since she never shares a fight with him, she should keep the passive. There is one more difference if you play a Folk Hero. Larian’s Patch 6 notes say the background’s “Never to be Chained Again” goal now only triggers if Aylin is present in Ramazith’s Tower and you allied with her.
If you want Aylin and Isobel in the final battle, lying to Lorroakan only makes sense if you plan to kill him later. As far as the quest scripts show, Aylin and Isobel only promise their help once you side with her against Lorroakan, or once Lorroakan dies without you ever siding with him. Siding with Lorroakan pays 5,000 gold and gives you his Firestorm, at the cost of Aylin, Isobel and Rolan as allies, and if Lorroakan dies in that fight too, Rolan and his siblings are killed as well.
Dame Aylin died in the Lorroakan fight
This is probably the most common scare in the whole quest. Aylin drops, her next turn comes around, and she will not get back up the way she did against Ketheric. It looks very final, but the quest has a rule for exactly this case.
The first time Aylin and Lorroakan end up in the same combat, the game removes her revive. In the fight against Lorroakan she has none, so if she drops, she stays down until the fight is over. Larian’s Patch 3 notes even name the exception. They say that “Dame Aylin now resurrects properly at the start of the next combat round if she’s killed as an endgame ally and in other Act III situations other than the Lorroakan combat.”
What happens after the fight is what counts. Once the fight ends with Lorroakan dead and you on her side, the game will fully heal Aylin, clear her harmful conditions and get her back on her feet a couple of seconds later. She will then walk over to Lorroakan and finish him off, the same as she would have if she had stayed up the whole time (the finishing cutscene only plays if his body is still intact and still on the top floor of the tower). Being down when Lorroakan dies does not count as a death, and you will not lose her as an ally for going down in this fight.
Launch bugs
Most of the “she died and never came back” posts are from August and September 2023, and two launch bugs made things look a lot worse back then.
The first one was her health. Long rests did not heal her, so players found her stuck at whatever HP she had left after the Ketheric fight. The best-known Reddit thread on this says that “ever since the fight in act 2 she’s been stuck at 23 health”. She went down at once against Lorroakan, did not get back up during the fight, and the player reloaded. Larian fixed it in Patch 3 with a short line, “Nightsong now heals too when you take a Long Rest.” Since then, a long rest with her in camp brings her back to full HP.
The second one was the journal. After the fight, quite a few players got the entry “We killed Dame Aylin”, even though she had stood up and talked to them. That was a journal bug. She was alive, and she still showed up for the final battle.
Bear in mind that she will not be in your camp straight after the fight. She will stay at the tower until your next long rest, and then the game brings her back to camp.
If she is down right now
There is nothing you need to do for her. Leave her on the floor and finish the fight. Reloading only throws away your progress, because she is going to get up by herself once Lorroakan is dead. Spend your actions on your own party and on Rolan if he is fighting with you. She will stay down until the last enemy is defeated, and that includes the myrmidons, Krank and Rolan if he sided with Lorroakan.
A rarer problem had Aylin stand around without joining the fight at all and become impossible to talk to afterwards. Larian lists a fix for that in Patch 8, so it should not happen in a current game.
Old saves
If your save is from before Patch 3 and Aylin is lying dead after a win on her side, loading it in Patch 8 should fix her, since the game patches old saves with exactly that problem when they load.
Child of the Moonmaiden
Child of the Moonmaiden is the passive that makes Aylin so hard to kill everywhere else. The in-game description reads “Blessed with the favour of a goddess, Nightsong cannot be permanently killed. When unconscious, the start of her turn she recovers 1 hit point.”
When she drops with it, she goes into a special downed state. Enemies ignore her and she cannot be hurt, and at the start of her turn she gets 1 hit point back and stands up with her movement and bonus action still available. That is why she seems to bounce back in every other fight.
She loses the passive the moment the fight with Lorroakan starts with her in it, whichever side you take. It happens at the start of the combat, so it is already gone for the whole fight. That also settles an old argument between players who noticed it missing at the start and players who only examined her afterwards. If you kill Lorroakan without her there, the quest files give no reason for her to lose it.
As far as the game files show, nothing gives the passive back after that fight. In the final battle she joins as a Sword of the Silverlight summon, which the game sets up separately, and the Patch 3 line quoted above says she now revives properly there.
The fan wiki guesses that the reason is a practical one, and that it is there so the fight can end if Aylin falls unconscious. A lot of players read the loss as Aylin breaking her oath or losing Selûne’s favour by killing Lorroakan. That is a player interpretation. In the files, the removal is tied to the start of the fight and happens even if you betray her.
Can Dame Aylin die anywhere else?
Damage alone never kills Aylin for good, not even in the Lorroakan fight. Permanent death only happens through one story choice in the Shadowfell in Act 2. In the regular Act 2 fights, such as the one against Balthazar, Child of the Moonmaiden simply gets her back up. Below is each place where she can fall, in story order.
Shadowfell
The Shadowfell is the first place where she can really die. If Aylin is sacrificed with the Spear of Night in the Shadowfell (usually by Shadowheart), that death is permanent and Aylin is gone for the rest of the game. If your party kills her in a normal fight there instead, she only dies temporarily and will come back.
Moonrise Towers rooftop
On the Moonrise Towers rooftop she fights Ketheric with you, and since Patch 3 she goes after him even more eagerly. Once Ketheric is low on health, a huge tentacle grabs her and pulls her away, and Ketheric vanishes as well. That is scripted. She is taken to the Mind Flayer Colony, and you will see her again down there. If she dies on the roof before that, she comes back about a round later.
Mind Flayer Colony and Myrkul
In the Colony you will find her Soul Caged, and you need to free her before she can fight. She cannot die for good in the Ketheric fights from damage alone. If she dies down there, she will come back about a round later as well. What can keep her down longer is a no-healing effect like Bone Chilled, which the Apostle of Myrkul puts on characters near him. Her 1 hit point per turn cannot go through while it lasts, so she will stay down until the effect ends.
Before Patch 5, a downed Aylin could miss the cinematic after the Myrkul fight. Larian fixed that, and now “If Nightsong is Downed when the Apostle of Myrkul is defeated, she will get up in time to participate in the ensuing cinematic.”
Act 3 and the final battle
In Act 3 she keeps Child of the Moonmaiden until the Lorroakan fight, so in any fight before that she will get back up like before. The game also has a second safety net for Act 3. If she does die in an Act 3 fight, Selûne brings her back at the start of the next round, or right after the fight if it ends first. Beware that this safety net is switched off in the Lorroakan fight too.
In the final battle she joins through the Sword of the Silverlight summon. Besides the Patch 3 line above, Larian also “Fixed issues with Dame Aylin not rejoining combat when resurrected as an endgame ally.” Patch 4 then added that “Nightsong will now be well rested when she offers you her aid in the final battle”, so the launch reports of a summoned Aylin arriving with a handful of HP should be history.
Keeping Aylin alive against Lorroakan
Since going down does not cost you Aylin on her side, these tips are mostly about an easier fight. Lorroakan has also changed since launch. Patch 6 made him Level 10 with Mage Armour already cast, his earth myrmidon can cast Stone Skin on him, and his myrmidons and Krank can all fly, so a lot of advice from 2023 is a little bit out of date.
- Take a long rest with Aylin in camp before you tell her about Lorroakan. Since Patch 3 that will bring her back to full HP. If Aradin’s mercenaries attacked your camp, heal her before the talk that follows the attack if you can, because that talk sends her straight to the tower. If the game refuses to let you head to camp, the reasons are in our guide to the BG3 “You cannot fast travel right now” message.
- Keep area spells and surfaces off her. Players report that she turns on you when she wakes if your spell put her down.
- Shove Lorroakan off the top level of the tower. Thunderwave or Telekinesis do the same job. Players reported in 2023 that he did not come back up, but the fight has been reworked since, so treat it as a bonus rather than a plan.
- Deal with Elemental Retort, his signature reaction. Since Patch 7 it costs him a reaction, targets roll a Dexterity saving throw against it, and his myrmidons give him extra reactions. Knocking him prone, stuns and paralysis such as Hold Person stop it, because he cannot react while affected, and Counterspell can cancel it if you have a reaction ready. Players disagree on whether Silence still works since Patch 7 changed it, even though Patch 1 said it did.
- Focus the myrmidons one at a time. A Planar Binding scroll lets you take one over, and players say the tome seller in Sorcerous Sundries sells them.
- Keep going until everything is down. The fight only ends once Lorroakan, all four myrmidons, Krank and Rolan (if he sided with Lorroakan) are defeated.
Siding with Lorroakan
If you side with Lorroakan, Aylin will turn on you in the tower. Since Patch 5 this is a proper fight of its own, as Larian “Added a brand new fight in Ramazith’s Tower if you betray Nightsong there.” She will get Moonmother’s Embrace, which gives her 100 temporary HP, Advantage on attack rolls, +4 to Strength and Charisma, and Resistance to Cold, Lightning and Fire.
Three Moonlight Slivers fight with her and keep her shielded with a globe that makes her invulnerable, so take them down first. Additionally, since Patch 7 their Banishing Smite can banish a myrmidon and stop it from empowering Lorroakan, which is one more reason to deal with them quickly.
Aylin does not die for good here either. She loses Child of the Moonmaiden at the start, the same as on her side, and the fight ends with her defeated. After your next long rest, Lorroakan locks her in his soul cage, where her maximum HP drops to 1 and she cannot fight. He will pay you 5,000 gold, and since Patch 3 the reward comes “immediately after defeating Nightsong, not once she’s caged.” In the final battle, Lorroakan offers his Firestorm, which “uses all the arcane might of Ramazith’s Tower to call down a fiery barrage”.
Isobel is still in your camp at that point. If you tell her that Aylin is caged, she goes to Ramazith’s Tower herself and is killed there, and Aylin swears to kill your “children, and their children beside”. If you leave Isobel alone and do not talk to her within about two long rests, she will leave your camp and a threat note takes her place.
Lorroakan can also die in this fight. One player kept him alive by throwing invisibility potions at him. If he does die, Aylin slips away after your next long rest and leaves a threat note behind. The wiki lists it as “An Assurance”, and it says “Dame Aylin has never died / And stayed dead”. If Rolan was alive, he and his siblings Cal and Lia are found dead, so you lose him as an ally as well. Isobel is gone too, which leaves you without Aylin, Isobel, Lorroakan and Rolan for the final battle.
Why is Aylin sad after killing Lorroakan?
After the fight on her side, Aylin seems sad more than relieved, and players read different things into it. The most common readings are that she feels bad about killing a beaten man, or that she is tired of escaping one captor only to run into the next one who wants her immortality. Some think she broke her oath or lost Selûne’s favour, partly because of the missing passive, but as covered above, that passive goes away the moment the fight starts.
Isobel hints at something older, the hurt of the past century. After your next long rest Aylin is back in camp, and once she and Isobel have said goodbye, they leave for a Selûnite enclave. That is normal, and they will come back for the final battle.
Final battle
In Patch 8 you no longer need to talk to Aylin and Isobel at the end of Act 2. Larian’s note says “You no longer need to interact with Nightsong and Isobel at the end of Act II to receive their Gather Your Allies ability.” Before that, skipping the talk was a real reason for them to be missing.
Aylin is an option in the final battle if you sided with her, or if you killed Lorroakan without siding with him. As far as the quest scripts show, she will not be there if you only lied to him and he is still alive. If Isobel died at your camp, Aylin leaves and will not help either.
She will arrive through the Sword of the Silverlight summon, which will “Summon Dame Aylin, Selûne’s shining paladin, to join your side in battle”. She waits with the other allies at the start of the final act, where you can talk to her, but in the fights she only joins when you use the Sword of the Silverlight action. Some of the “Aylin is missing” reports seem to come from players who looked for her in the hall instead of in their summon actions.
Conclusion
For most playthroughs, side with Aylin, take a long rest before you tell her, and do not reload if she drops against Lorroakan. She will be back on her feet once he is dead, and the only death that sticks is the Shadowfell choice in Act 2.
