If a science ship on one of your colonies has turned up “The Doorway,” you’ve hit one of Stellaris’s rarer colony event chains — a dimensional portal discovered on a planet you already own. Here’s what it actually does, what can happen when you investigate it, and whether it’s worth the risk.
What Triggers The Doorway
The Doorway is a colony event with a small chance to trigger roughly 2-3 years after any colony is founded. The initial event describes a strange air current on the planet, eventually traced to a dimensional portal quietly leaking atmosphere into itself. Investigating adds a Portal Research Area planetary feature and kicks off a special project: Probe the Dimensional Portal.
The Outcome Is Random — Not a Choice
This is the part worth knowing before you commit: finishing the probing special project doesn’t let you pick a path. It rolls randomly between five possible outcomes, each with roughly equal odds (except the last, which is rarer and has extra conditions):
- A Dimension of Suffering
- High-Energy Dimension
- The Null Void
- Mirror Mirror
- A Dimension of Static (rarer — can’t happen if your homeworld is artificial, if you don’t own your homeworld, if you’re not a player empire, or if you’ve already rolled this outcome before)
What Each Outcome Means
A Dimension of Suffering is the most dangerous roll. Contact with material from this dimension causes intense suffering and eventually suicidal/self-harm behavior in biological subjects, and even remote study causes discomfort and system errors. This chain can escalate into real threats on your colony, so keep some defenses nearby if you’re investigating a Doorway at all.
High-Energy Dimension is a resource-positive result — you gain the ability to siphon a small, steady amount of energy through the portal, and the same tech has potential use as a weapons system down the line.
The Null Void leads to a dimension of pure entropy where energy readings are hard to get, but it opens the door to eventually building a weapon that uses the void’s destructive properties offensively.
Mirror Mirror is the most narratively interesting result: you make contact with a parallel version of your own empire, diverged from yours at some point in history. From there you can engage in inter-dimensional trade with your counterpart, which fluctuates over time and can go well or badly — including your counterpart being threatened or wiped out by hostile “Warp beasts” in the worst case.
A Dimension of Static can result in the portal quietly collapsing on its own with no reward, but can also branch into other event content depending on further rolls.
Is It Worth Investigating?
Since you can’t pick the outcome, treat The Doorway like a gamble with mostly upside and one dangerous downside (Suffering). If you’re already stable with decent fleet coverage near the colony, it’s generally worth probing — four of the five outcomes are neutral-to-good, and even the worst case is manageable if you’re not caught completely unprepared. If that colony is a fragile early outpost with no nearby fleet, it’s reasonable to hold off until you’re in a better position to handle whatever comes through.
